Description
Each Calibration Syringe has a label indicating the model, serial number, date and calibrated volume. The calibrated mechanical stop in each Calibration Syringe provides an accurate and repeatable volume standard appropriate for spirometer calibration. The mechanical stop has its corresponding volume calibrated with a volumetric apparatus certified to meet the accuracy requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology Circular 602.
High Accuracy at a Low Cost: The Calibration Syringes manufactured here at A-M Systems offer users a low cost method for calibrating the volume measurements for pulmonary function analyzers. Analyzers need to be periodically checked against a known volume to ensure that they are in calibration. It is poor practice to depend upon an internal calibration procedure without utilizing a known volume standard, since studies have shown that pulmonary function analyzers may give erroneous results (see New England Journal of Medicine 289: 1283, 1973).
The Importance of Transparent Construction: Transparent construction allows the user to observe the O-ring seal between the cylinder and piston. The O-ring requires lubrication for smooth operation, and a dry O-ring will be easily noticed with transparent construction. Also, problems such as a crack in the piston or cylinder, which could cause leaks and yield unreliable calibration volumes, will be apparent with the clear plastic construction. Why a 3 Liter Syringe? A-M Systems offers a 3 liter size to meet the need for a calibration syringe which will satisfy the minimum requirements for a calibrating standard for spirometry equipment. The American Thoracic Society, in its "Standardization of Spirometry: 1994 Update," states that "the spirometer's ability to accurately measure volume must be checked at least daily with a calibrated syringe with a volume of at least 3 L." The European Respiratory Society indicates the use of "an airtight 3 liter calibrated syringe" for the calibration of spirometry equipment in its official statement entitled "Lung Volumes and Forced Ventilatory Flows."
